Despite being digital, cryptocurrencies are subject to regulation like any other payment system. New concepts such as initial coin offerings are also treated as securities depending on the facts and circumstances of the ICO. Exchanges also need to comply with local rules and “know your customer” (KYC) and anti money-laundering (AML) requirements. Last updated November 16th, 2017.
